Following a spike in alcohol-related violence, police in Kununurra, in north-west Western Australia have decided to intervene by introducing liquor restrictions. Hospital staff in the area have backed the police’s decision.
Police recently instituted a ban on full strength take-away alcohol for five days. Police said crime reports decreased from 26 to 10 and the number of calls to police were also down.
There was also a decline in hospital presentations, due to a 50 per cent reduction in alcohol-related attacks.
