  • Hoteliers Criticise Pokie Player Alcohol Ban in Tasmania

Hoteliers have criticised the alcohol ban placed on pokie players in Tasmania, dubbing the new restrictions as restrictive and harsh.

The review of the Responsible Gambling Mandatory Code of Practice for Tasmania came into effect on May 1st.

Customers in pubs will no longer be served alcohol if they are playing, seated or standing at a pokie machine.

People playing at casinos cannot be served alcohol between 6pm and close of gambling each day.

The Hospitality Association said these laws were the harshest in  the country and make it hard for people to gamble in a pub or club.  See more at http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-04-14/alcohol-ban-for-pokies-players-in-tasmania/9658816

  • Australia’s Risky Drinking Habits Reveal

It’s official, The ACT is the healthiest state in Australia.

According to a report based on 2011 data, alcohol and illicit drugs are the cause of one in 20 deaths in Australia.

The new analysis by The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare revealed that men are twice as likely to suffer health consequences as a result of drug and alcohol problems than women.

Although the ACT has the nation’s lowest burden of disease related to alcohol and illicit drugs, it also recorded the nation’s third highest rate of  opioid dependence. Opioids are drugs that act on the  nervous system to reduce pain and can be in pain killers like codeine or illegal drugs such as heroine.

In 2011, 4.5 per cent of all Australian deaths were as a result of drugs and alcohol.

  • Roadside Breath Tests and Crash Leads to Arrest

A driver who was caught by police in February at a stationary roadside breath test site was sentenced in local court and fined $880 and had his driver’s licence disqualified for five months.

The  man was stopped by police and at first did not believe he was over the limit, saying that the device must have been faulty.

He became agitated and another alcolizer device was used to test him and he returned another positive result.

The man was arrested and taken to the police station where a breath analysis returned a mid-range reading of 0.117.

The man had his licence confiscated and suspended.

This incident is a reminder to never drink and drive. Always ensure you have arranged safe, reliable transport home before you even begin drinking.

  • Parents Shouldn’t Give Teens Alcohol

While many parents believe its “safer” to give their kids alcohol than let them sneak around and buy it themselves and then drink it behind their backs with friends, a new study suggests this strategy is not effective for protecting teenagers from the risks of alcohol abuse.

Some parents say their parents did it for them so they do the same for their kids but this has been linked to dangerous outcomes.

The study published in The Lancet found that teenagers who were supplied alcohol by their parents were twice as likely to find alcohol from other sources the following year.

The researchers also found that 81 per cent of teens involved in the study who received alcohol from their parents reported binge drinking as compared with 62 per cent of teens who received alcohol from non-parent sources.

The study also found that teenagers who received alcohol from their parents were more likely to have symptoms of alcohol use disorder than those who received no alcohol. Read more at https://www.lifehacker.com.au/2018/03/dont-give-your-teens-alcohol/
