  • Alcohol Interlocks for WA Drink Drivers This Year

As of this year up to 5000 drivers will be forced to have alcohol interlocks installed in their vehicles, at their own expense.

Road Safety Minister Liza Harvey said this would help reduce the number of drink driving incidents that we see on the road.

The alcohol interlocks are like breathalysers that prevent high risk offenders from driving a car while drunk.

As of the second half of the year, devices will become compulsory for all motorists convicted of driving with a blood alcohol level in excess of 0.15 and those with more than one excess 0.08 offence.  Source: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-03-20/interlocks-will-cut-dui-rates-liza-harvey-wa-minister/7261206

  • Australian Study Says Live Music Reduces Alcohol Violence

Sydney’s lockout laws have been hailed by some as a blessing and condemned by others as a curse, having negatively impacted the city’s music community and nightlife.

According to a recent article the attempts by government to curb alcohol fuelled violence have actually killed the music scene in the city.

The article cited the work of expert, Dr Anne Fox, a British anthropologist who’s specialised in the study of drinking cultures and studied Australian and New Zealand drinking cultures in 2013. She found that live music is “good at preventing alcohol fuelled violence”, the writer claims.

  • Sleep Problems could be Another Symptom of Foetal Alcohol Exposure

If you’re pregnant, Australian guidelines say you should avoid alcohol completely during pregnancy and an increasingly large body of research is mounting to prove that this is the best approach.

The most recent research emerged out of the US, where alcohol exposure has been linked to poor sleep.

Researchers used lab mice and injected them with alcohol. They noticed that mice injected with alcohol a week after birth, the equivalent to 3 months of alcohol exposure in the womb, did not get as much slow wave sleep as the other mice.

Slow wave sleep is restorative and turns events into long lasting  memories. The alcohol exposed mice were also hyperactive and had memory problems.
