A leading Canberra doctor has called for more to be done to enforce the city’s liquor laws, following the one punch assault on New Years Day.
Dr David Caldicott says that alcohol is contributing to the increasing problem of violence in Canberra.
According to the doctor, surveys conducted by the Australian College for Emergency Medicine regularly show that one third of all emergency room presentations around 2am are due to alcohol. And unfortunately in Canberra, this seems to be a common occurence.
The doctor says the violence is taking place at the same places, outside the same venues. Part of the reason is that alcohol frees people of their inhibitions, the doctor says.
Dr Caldicott called on the ACT government to “make meaningful reform to alcohol legislation”.
