Price of Cheap Wine to Soar under Tax Reforms

In a submission set out by The Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE), the price of the cheapest alcohols would rise, in a measure that would reduce consumption and raise government funds.

The modelling was commissioned by FARE and would include an overhaul of how wine is taxed and would add 10 per cent to current excises.

FARE’s Pre‐Budget Submission 2016‐17 suggests wine and cider be taxed in the same way as beer, base on the volume of alcohol rather than on its selling price, as is the current method of taxation.
