Parents in an American town are facing charges of neglect after the mother drank beer at a bar while breastfeeding.

While a glass of wine may help with the stress of being a new mother, is it safe for the baby?

According to many experts alcohol goes back and forth between breast milk and the mother’s blood as though it were water, so if you have alcohol in your blood, you’ll have it in your milk.

But drinking while pregnant isn’t the same as drinking when breastfeeding. In the uterus, a mother is sharing her bloodstream with her baby; if she’s drunk, the baby is even more drunk because they’re so small and their liver is still developing.
