Over the last 7 years the council has increased the number of alcohol-free zones in the city from 149 to 400 which led to widespread criticism of the city. Many labelled the city boring and dead which is why the mayor has decided to follow the example of cities like Las Vegas and Berlin who have lifted the alcohol bans in streets and parks.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore recently said adults need to be treated as adults and cited new crime statistics to justify removing 62 alcohol free zones in and around the city.

Guests to Sydney often mocked the city for the harsh rules, leading the hospitality industry, music industry and backpackers etc. to welcome the news.
