  • Non-drinkers Use An Array of Methods to Avoid Alcohol at Work Events

    Many workers feel pressurised to drink when at a work party, simply because everyone else is. The pressure to fit in doesn’t stop in high school in fact it can get worse for some people.

    For someone who doesn’t drink or for those avoiding alcohol for whatever reason, there are a number of “Tricks” used to avoid alcohol.

    From being the designated driver to pretending they are trying to lose weight, a study found workers use a variety of excuses because they don’t want to be seen as a condescending non-drinker or a stick-in-the-mud.

  • Average Number of Drinks Men and Women Have at Every Age, Charted

    According to new research published in the journal BMC Medicine, the chart above is an illustration of what life looks like in terms of how much we drink.

    As the chart shows frequent drinking becomes more common around the age of 25 for men, at which stage they consume around 13 drinks a week on average. Women tend to drink considerably less.

  • Some Alcohol Calorie Facts You Didn’t Know

     

    • A standard glass of wine has the same amount of calories as a piece of chocolate or four cookies.
    • A pint of lager has the same number of calories as a whole packet of crisps or a slice of pizza.
    • In The United States the average wine drinker takes around 2,000 kilo calories from alcohol every month.
    • Because alcohol is made from fermented sugar and starch, high on alcohol translates to being high in sugar and high in calories.

  • The Great Australasian Beer SpecTAPular Expands to Sydney

     

    The Great Australasian Beer SpecTAPular has been taking place in Melbourne for 3 years and now after much success, the event is spreading to Sydney.

    Last year alone 120 beers were created for the event at Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building. Some interesting beers were created including beer made from peanut butter.

  • Kings Cross Operators Banned for Life After Repeated Breaches

    The former operators of Kings Cross bar, Déjà vu have been banned from holding liquor licences for life after committing repeated breaches of the Liquor Act.

    One of the breaches committed involved serving alcohol to minors.

    This serves as a cautionary tale to other liquor licensees about the importance of Responsible Service of Alcohol training.

  • Why is Binge Drinking so Common in Young Adults

    When serving alcohol it is important to recognise the importance of serving responsibly especially keeping in mind that young people should always be asked to prove that they are of a legal drinking age before being served alcohol.

    Young people tend to be more prone to binge drinking and the consequences that come with it. Trying to understand why young people are more prone to binge drinking is the subject of a post on New York Times website.

    In The USA people need to be 21 years or older to drink, yet young people in this country binge drink at alarming levels, particularly high school and college students.

    In Australia we have Responsible Service of Alcohol rules in place which aim to tackle this alarming behaviour by young people.

  • Suburban Brisbane Pubs Apply for 3am Liquor Licence

    A number of suburban Brisbane pubs have recently applied to have their trading hours extended to 3am. Currently the venues latest trading hours are between midnight to 2:00am.

    The Australian Leisure and Hospitality Group (ALH) on behalf of a number of its venues (Oxford 152, the Holland Park Hotel, Stones Corner Hotel, Belmont Tavern, the Australian National Hotel, Sunnybank Hotel and the Mt Gravatt Hotel), has applied to the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation (OLGR) to extend trading hours to 3am.

  • Alcohol Servers – Don’t Make This Mistake

    Don’t let this happen to you. A venue owner on The Sunshine Coast has been fined $1500 for serving alcohol to an already drunk patron.

    The licensee and an employee of a hotel in Gympie pleaded guilty to supplying liquor to an intoxicated person resulting in a $1500 fine for the licensee and the employee was placed on a six-month good behaviour bond with a recognisance of $600.

    No one at the venue made an effort to stop the patron from consuming more alcohol although he was already intoxicated. That is why Responsible Service of Alcohol training is so important.

  • World Whisky Day Celebration

    Okay, so we’re a couple of days late, World Whisky Day was actually on Saturday 16 May but its never a bad time to have a whisky drink. These recipes from Metro.co.uk are delicious all year round!

    • Honey Smash by Marian Beke at Nightjar
    1. 50ml Jack Daniels Tenessee Honey
    2. Wild Spearmint
    3. 15ml Bee Pollen Syrup/Honey
    4. 40ml Watermelon juice
    5. 15ml Ginger Wine
    6. Elderberry Liqueur
    7. Build and swizzle with crushed ice in a tin mug with Polo mints on a straw.
    • Tee Off
    1. 50ml Glenmorangie Original
    2. 50ml Cold Earl Grey Tea
    3. 20ml Fresh Lemon Juice
    4. 15ml Simple Syrup
    5. Fever Tree Bitter Lemon
    6. Shake all ingredients except bitter lemon.
    7. Strain into a highball and top with Fever Tree bitter lemon.
    8. Garnish with an orange twist.
