  • These Are The Most Violent Venues in NSW

    The updated list of the most violent venues in NSW has been released, with the Plantation Hotel in Coffs Harbour taking the top spot.

    Released on 27 November the list now also includes for the first time a sporting venue, the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust. The sports venue features at number 14 on the list with 12 violent incidents taking place there in the last financial year.

    The list which began in 2008 includes the most violent incidents ranging from 21 in the past year to 12.

    Venues such as the nightclub Home which recorded 19 incidents and more are subject to a mandatory 1:30am lockout and have to stop serving alcohol 30 minutes before closing. They are also banned from serving alcohol in glass containers or shots, doubles and pre-mixed drinks over 5 per cent alcohol after midnight.

  • Reminder, Don’t Serve Alcohol to Minors

    An example of the consequences of serving alcohol to minors, or allowing minors to consume alcohol on your premises, has been highlighted by an incident which resulted in the suspension of one licensee’s liquor licence after minors were found by police drinking in an outside area.

    The OLGR took the opportunity to warn licensees about the importance of checking IDs when serving alcohol to ensure minors aren’t being served.

    The Palbok BBQ Pty Ltd, trading as Palbok House, has been fined $2200 and had its liquor licence suspended for 21 days.

    To avoid similar serious consequences ensure all employees have completed Responsible Service of Alcohol training.

  • ACEM Study Finds True Extent of Alcohol Harm

    Research by Australian and Kiwi hospitals has found that thousands of people are landing in the emergency room because of alcohol related reasons annually.

    The study is the largest of its kind, initiated by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM). The ACEM is calling for more lockout laws to be introduced, which they say with help reduce alcohol related harm across the country.

    According to the group, 9600 patients were screened in a week in December 2014 to determine whether alcohol was a fator in their attendance. The researchers found alcohol had contributed to the injury or illness in one out of every 12 patients asked. At peak times (weekends) this number rose to one in every 8 patients.

  • Drinkers Warned Dont Mix Caffeine and Alcohol

    Researchers from Curtin University are warning young people yet again not to mix alcohol with caffeinated energy drinks.

    The warning comes from Professor Simone Pettigrew, School of Psychology and Speech Pathology after she said previous research had identified the potential health risks associated with energy drinks and combining alcohol with energy drinks.

    She explained that evidence suggests there are negative physiological effects of consuming alcohol mixed with energy drinks particularly among young people.

    Some of the effects include agitation, elevated blood pressure, sleep disturbance, increased susceptibility to addiction, dental caries, miscarriage, arrhythmia, and even death.

    She said that further evidence exists that alcohol mixed with energy drinks is linked to increased alcohol consumption, alcohol dependency and alcohol related harms.

  • NSW To Digitise RSA and RSG Licences

    The NSW government recently announced that RSA and RCG licences will be available in a digital format as of mid-2016.

    The announcement was made last week by the Minister for Finance and Services, Dominic Perrottet. Perrottet said that while citizens were becoming increasingly mobile and digital, the government also needed to be.

    According to the minister the technology that will probably be introduced in 2016 will allow for licences to be displayed on smartphones. They will also make it possible for people to apply for licences and renew their licences using their smartphone.

  • Local Wines Make a Splash at Hong Kong Competition

    Australian wines continue to impress at an international level, picking up 28 gold medals and 9 trophies at this year’s Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Competition.

    Australian wines and spirits performed well at the awards with Australian Vintage Limited picking up 3 trophies as well as 31 medals.

    In an article on TheShout.com.au chief winemaker of McGuigan Wines, Neil McGuigan, expressed his gratitude at receiving such a top honour for our Riesling in Hong Kong.

    He said the event was an excellent opportunity to showcase Australian wines and spirits to the emerging Asian markets.

  • NT Government Accused of Ignoring State Alcohol Issues

    After a Palmerston supermarket was granted an alcohol licence, the NT Government has been accused of being too generous in their handing out of the alcohol licences.

    Former Territory Corrections Commissioner Ken ­Middlebrook said the NT government were issuing licences like “they were tickets to a party”.

    Mr Middlebrook said this led him to question the commitment of the state government to address alcohol issues. He highlighted the high number of alcohol related incarcerations in Territory prisons.

    IGA supermarket under construction on Forrest Parade in Rosebury was granted a liquor licence by the Director General of Licensing recently, which led Mr Middlebrook to condemn the government for not addressing alcohol issues in the state.

  • Risks of Mixing Alcohol and Diet Drinks

    In the past we heard that mixing alcohol with diet soda could make you drunk faster but now research has emerged suggesting that people who mixed alcohol with diet drinks actually ended up with more alcohol on their breath.

    The study conducted by researchers at Northern Kentucky University, found that people who consumed vodka mixed with diet soda had higher concentrations of alcohol on their breath than people who drank the same with regular soda.

    Amy Stamates, head of the research said prevention materials should include this information because people trying to avoid the extra calories of regular sodas were risking higher breath alcohol concentrations.
