    According to the popular wine app, Vivino which has 35 million subscribers worldwide, the best wine in the world is the Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 from Napa Valley in California.

    The revelation was based on the apps data mining of 40 million reviews and 120 million ratings posted by users last year.

  • Is Alcohol More Common Among The UK’s Service Men and Women

    Alcohol abuse is becoming a major concern among the UK armed forces service men and women, according to recent studies.

    Historically alcohol was used to encourage bonding and deal with difficult experiences that service men and women often face and while overall alcohol use is declining, harmful drinking is still double that of the general population.

    According to data 11% or men and 5% of women in the UK armed forces are guilty of alcohol misuse, in other words drinking at a level that is likely to be harmful to their health.This is compared with 4% of men and 2% of women in the general population.

    A recent project – a collaboration between King’s Centre for Military Health Research and University of Liverpool, funded by the Medical Research Council, was meant to determine if an app could also support people in the armed forces to reduce their drinking.

    Researchers developed an app to help people monitor their alcohol consumption and manage it. Users of the app can set goals, compare drinking to civilians and other service men and women.

    It also provides information and support in real time.

    Why Should You Avoid Drinking before Cardio and Resistance Training?

    There is evidence that drinking before a workout, particularly cardio will hinder your workout.

    Evidence shows you’ll get fatigued quicker and take longer to hit your usual goals. The extra fatigue that comes from drinking is the result of the citric acid cycle slowing down, the pathway known as gluconeogenesis is inhibited, which effectively means less glucose for the body to use, in other words less energy.

    Also the body prefers to metabolize alcohol and alters the metabolism of carbohydrates and lipids, so you wont hit those goals.

  • Half of All Alcohol Consumed by Heavy Drinkers

    According to a study by researchers of Victoria’s La Trobe University, more than half of all alcohol consumed in Australia is being consumed by only 10 per cent of drinkers.

    The study found that those 2million heavy drinkers consumed a shocking 54.4 per cent of all the alcohol consumed in the nation.

    It also found the heaviest drinkers are more likely to drink cheap alcohol like cask wine and beer and were also more likely to drink at home.

    The study also found that many of these heavy drinkers are middle-aged men living in rural and regional Australia.

  • Queensland Government Scraps Junk Food and Alcohol Ads

    The Queensland government recently announced the banning of junk food and alcohol advertisements at government-owned outdoor sites.

    The junk food ban comes as an effort to address childhood obesity including restrictions for out-of-home ads featuring high fat, sugar and salt products and alcohol.

    The ban will be implemented in consultation with the advertising industry, health Minister Steven Miles recently said.

    The government is currently in talks with the outdoor advertising industry about how the restrictions will be implemented.

  • Winemakers Swap Grapes for Cherries

    NSW Winemakers are cashing in on the region’s abundant cherry harvests by creating a wine that’s made not with grapes but cherries.

    Winemaker Terrry Mulligan got the idea to make cherry wine at his Young based winery after the annual cherry festival years ago. The festive takes place in the town each year.

    He explained that the process is completely different to making wine with grapes because you don’t get as much juice from cherries as you do from wine.That makes the process harder because separating the cherry pulp and skins isn’t easy.

    But is it really wine?

    Some people have questioned whether cherry wine is a wine or a liqueur, given its 10 per cent proof but Mr Mulligan believes it’s a wine because it’s fermented in the same way, similarly to a dry Rose style. He advises the wine be served chilled.

    Although he admits it doesn’t have the same complexity as a good grape wine, if you love cherries you should definitely try to get your hands on a bottle.
