Roy Morgan research shows that most of the Australians visiting pubs are going for a meal rather than just a drink. Pub owners should be pleased because this is good for business.

According to the research, in the 12 months to June 2015, 43 per cent of Australians over the legal drinking age visited a pub or hotel at least once in any given 3 month period in order to eat a meal.

This was double the amount of people going just to have a drink, that equals 7.9 million people. This phenomenon is part of the reason “gastropubs” have become so popular.

  • Worries about Brisbane Vapour Alcohol Bar

With health experts condemning it, a Brisbane show director has defended the vapour cloud bar where guests absorb alcohol through their eyes and lungs.

We first heard of the concept when it began in London but it recently made its way to our shores as part of the Fear & Delight dinner and stage show at the Brisbane Festival.

Scott Maidment, the show’s director said this isn’t a way to get people drunk but rather present them with a new and stimulating experience.

  • Breathe in Alcohol at Brisbane Bar

A bar where you literally breathe in alcohol has been launched in Brisbane.

A Brisbane bar is the first in Australia following success of the concept in London.

The alcohol cloud allows patrons to breathe in alcohol instead of drinking it as usual. It also apparently prevents a hangover.

The bar, called Alcoholic Architecture was set up for a Brisbane festival. After 40 minutes in the bar, patrons would have had the equivalent of 2 drinks.

Patrons’ bodies are covered when they enter the bar but their face is left exposed to absorb alcohol through their eyes and lungs.

  • Adding Smokiness to Your Cocktails

To add another dimension of flavour to your cocktails and take the taste to the next level, why not add a hint of smokiness to enhance the drink?

    Here’s how.

    1. Add smoke with spirits

The writer of the DrinkStraightUp.com blog suggests rinsing a glass in a scotch such as Compass Box’s The Peat Monster, or popular Laphroaig.

    2. Try Charcoal Aging

Put what you want to age into an air tight container and add some natural hardwood charcoal.
Seal and store in a dark, cool dry place. Taste every few days to check when its ready.

    3. Try a Smoked Tea

Use Lapsang Souchong tea, a black tea with a smoked flavour. Either infuse the spirit you want to use with the tea or use it to make a simple syrup.

    4. Smoking the glass

  • Canberra Outdoor Bars Allowed for First Time

There are fears that outdoor, alcohol-fuelled crimes will rise in Canberra now that ACT laws have been changed to permit the sale of alcohol outdoors by licensed venues, if they apply for an outdoor bar.

The state government said the move would be a boost for small business and would make a night out in Canberra more enjoyable but there are some that are concerned that we may see a risk in violence linked to alcohol on Canberra streets.

Servers of alcohol will need to be more vigilant when enforcing responsible service of alcohol.

  • Effects of SA Lockout Laws May be Exaggerated

According to research by University of Adelaide law lecturer Dr Mark Giancaspro, the benefits of SA 3:00am lockout laws on alcohol fuelled violence may have been exaggerated.

According to Dr Giancaspro lockout laws might not be the only reason why levels of alcohol-fuelled violence have dropped in South Australia. It probably has more to do with a combination of measures including requiring licensed venues to use particular forms of glassware; limiting the drink varieties sold, providing first aid officers and public transport information and managing queues outside premises better.

  • Calls For Lower Alcohol Taxes on Vic Pubs and Clubs

The Victorian branch of the Australian Hotels Association has blamed the high price of drinks at pubs and clubs for alcohol fuelled violence and anti-social behaviour fuelled by alcohol and is calling for alcohol taxes on venues to be lowered.

The AHA Vic Branch says that if alcohol taxes are decreased, venues could lower the price of their alcohol which will minimise people pre-loading. At the moment patrons drink about 80 per cent of the drinks for the night at home and only 20 per cent is consumed on the premise because of the high price. They say this is contributing to drunkenness and anti-social behaviour.

The group is now lobbying for taxes on pub and bar drinks to be lowered, with the aim of “luring” people back to these venues.

The AHA says licensed venues were better equipped to deal with the responsible service of alcohol nowadays and are ready for more customers.

Do you want crystal clear, clean glasses easily without the hassle of hand polishing? It IS possible.
