We all know that buzzed feeling you get after a few drinks but why does this happen and why does too much alcohol have the opposite effect on us?
Alcohol increases the amount of dopamine in your brain, creating a feeling of pleasure.As you drink more alcohol, your blood-alcohol concentration rises and different parts of your brain are affected.
Alcohol then affects your cerebral cortex and alters your thinking and senses. It also affects your cerebellum, throwing off your balance. The hypothalamus and pituitary gland are affected influencing things like your sex drive and the medulla is also affected, impacting your heart rate, breathing etc. Read more here.
Problems with alcohol may be inherited, according to a geneticist and author Dr Margaret Smith.
One only needs to look at the number of celebrities whose children have followed in their footsteps when it comes to alcohol abuse to realise there must be a link between our genes and our drinking habits, the latest example is the tragic death of Bobbi Kristina Brown in much the same manner as her mother Whitney Houston.
According to Dr Smith a novelty seeking gene DRD4 may be to blame.
A family history of depression and anxiety may also have something to do with it.

People in dry communities are using Vegemite sandwich spread to make alcohol, but the Prime Minister has warned against the ban of Vegemite.
A “Vegemite watch” is off the table, according to Prime Minister Tony Abbott. He said that it is more important that we ensure that remote communities are being properly policed.”

After being opened for just 5 weeks the bar which served no alcohol, was forced into closure by the fact that it had no customers.

A subscription service that’s been developed by 2 MIT grads and has been running for about a year now, could be the answer to getting to know your wine preferences.
The service called Bright Cellars, asks your favourite chocolate and flavour preferences, like dark chocolate, milk chocolate, orange, strawberry, peach etc. without asking direct wine questions. It then uses an algorithm to determine what wines you would like best.
