  • This is Why You Feel Warm When You Drink Alcohol

    Ever wondered why we feel warm when we drink? Well this feeling of warmth is generated by heat sensitive neurons (thermoreceptors) located in the skin that detect a rise in your skin temperature from an increase in blood flow in the vessels near the surface of the skin.

    Although you feel warm temporarily, you’re actually getting cold on the inside. Alcohol consumption has been found to reduce the perception of cold air temperatures, probably due to the effects of alcohol on the brain rather than the changes in dilation of blood vessels.

    Ultimately alcohol affects the mind and brain, so whenever you drink, do so responsibly and moderately.

  • Poll Shows More Australians Want Alcohol Harms Addressed

    According to research from FARE (The Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education),more Australians want action on alcohol harms.

    Many Australians suggested they would support a ban on alcohol ads at sporting events and would also support more restrictions on television advertising.

    There has even been some support for hikes in alcohol tax.

    Many Australians admitted that alcohol advertising is too prolific and want something done about it, according to the report.

    Of those who participated in the survey,78 per cent believed more should be done to prevent alcohol harms.

  • Australian Distillers Win Big International Competition

    The San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC) just took place for the 16th time and more than 1700 spirits were submitted.

    The competition was held in March and there were multiple Double Gold Medals handed out with West Australian rum doing especially well.

    The Grove Experience and The Hoochery Distillery were awarded the prestigious titles for their Spiced Rum.

    Another big winner was Four Pillars, picking up its second Double Gold Medal in 3 years Four Pillars Rare Dry Gin.

  • Victoria’s Drink Driving Limit Slashed

    The Andrews government is considering a radical road safety shake-up which could see drivers busted with a single drink in their system.

    Luke Donnellan, Roads Minister recently confirmed that the government is considering reducing the legal blood alcohol limit from 0.05 to 0.02 if it can be proven to reduce road trauma.

    Tough new road safety laws dictate that Victorian drivers that blow over the blood alcohol limit will be forced to install an interlock to their car.

  • Alcohol Abuse Causing Liver Cancer

    According to a recent study, the number of new cases of liver cancer or Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is on the rise in developed countries.

    The study by St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne analysed a number of sources including admissions information from 7 big hospitals and other data with the evidence revealing that the incidence of liver cancer almost doubled.

    This is alarming considering that excessive consumption of alcohol is one of the main causes of the disease. Let’s remember the importance of consuming alcohol moderately and responsibly.

  • Pubs and Bars Aren’t The Only Ones Serving Alcohol

    Recent data from the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation revealed that there are 29 butchers, 68 florists, 45 bed and breakfasts and 150 gift shops that serve alcohol in the state, so it’s not just the pubs and clubs serving alcohol. In fact hair dressers are the most common business to have a iquor license, other than bars, hotels, restaurants and pubs.

    In Victoria, 102 hair salons have a license to serve liquor to their customers while they get their hair styled. ‘

    The commission also allows for minor  business execmption, which allows selected businesses to serve alcohol without a liquor license.

    Experts are warning that the increasing causal link between alcohol and everyday services was concerning because people are increasingly tempted to drink even when getting day to day services done.
