  • Should You Be Drinking Alcohol if You’re Breastfeeding?’

Parents in an American town are facing charges of neglect after the mother drank beer at a bar while breastfeeding.

While a glass of wine may help with the stress of being a new mother, is it safe for the baby?

According to many experts alcohol goes back and forth between breast milk and the mother’s blood as though it were water, so if you have alcohol in your blood, you’ll have it in your milk.

But drinking while pregnant isn’t the same as drinking when breastfeeding. In the uterus, a mother is sharing her bloodstream with her baby; if she’s drunk, the baby is even more drunk because they’re so small and their liver is still developing. But  breast milk only contains the same amount of alcohol as the bloodstream.

  • Risky Drinking Higher Among Australian Women than Their Daughters

It appears that the message of abstainence is getting across to teenagers, if the latest National Drug Strategy Household Survey is anything to go by.

According to the survey, which took place in the second half of 2016 and surveyed 24,000 people, shows that Australian women are out-drinking their daughters.

When it comes to risky drinking, women in their fifties are exceeding the lifetime risk guidelines, more than those women aged 18-24.

The survey showed that parents and grandparents are taking their risky drinking habits with them into their old age, while young people are waiting longer before they try illicit drugs, alcohol and cigarettes.

Is alcohol to blame for the increase in crime in certain parts of NSW?

According to quarterly crime figures released by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research statistics, alcohol related assaults have jumped across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, a trend attributed to the “watering down” of licensing laws and the removal of city liquor inspectors.

The 2 cities recorded increases in non-domestic assaults which rose by 6.9%). Shoplifting increased by 19.6%, stealing from a dwelling was up 8.7% and malicious damage to property went up by 9.6%.

According to the bureau, two-thirds of the rise in crime happened near licensed premises, indicating these crimes may be alcohol-fuelled.
