  • Should You Drink Before Bed? We Question the Science

I’ve often heard people saying a nightcap actually helps them sleep better, but it appears that these people are mistaken. Drinking in the evening isn’t good for your sleep at all, especially if you drink more than 2 rounds.

According to experts, in a post on HuffingtonPost.com.au drinking alcohol in the evening will interrupt your sleep in the middle of the night. It will also cause you to be more tired the next day.

If you do intend on drinking in the evening, and still want a good night’s sleep, you should keep these points in mind,

    1. Stop after the second round.
    2. End with food
    3. Consider drinking around happy hour to give your body enough time before bed.

  • The Low Down on Synthetic Alcohol

The latest in alcohol developments is the hangover-free synthetic alcohol called “alcosynth”.

The new alcohol has been developed by a British neuroscientist, David Nutt who believes the invention will save lives.

Mr Nutt believes that alcosynth is 100 times more safe than alcohol and is practically calorie free.

Much of the reason synthetic alcohol may be safer than normal alcohol is that it does not produce a compound called acetaldehyde when broken down, as alcohol does. It is this toxin that builds up in the body and causes tissue damage.

This is what leads to liver disease in many heavy drinkers. The toxin also builds up in heart tissue and may lead to chronic heart disease, as a result Nutt believes his synthetic alcohol will save lives.

  • Drink Drivers in WA Forced to Get Alcohol Interlocks

As of the end of October, repeat drink drivers in Western Australia will have to install “alcohol interlock devices” to their vehicles.

Drink drivers will have to conduct a breath test for cars to start and the device will have to be paid for by offenders themselves at a cost of $1600.

The Deputy Premier and Road Safety Minister Liza Harvey said the devices would be fitted to vehicles after drivers had served drink driving suspensions and would have to be in place for at least 6 months.

A public education campaign was also launched in the lead up to the new law which is coming into effect on October 24.
