The study by Monash University which found that higher taxes on cheap alcohol could be successful in reducing problematic consumption, has been rejected by the wine industry’s peak body, the Winemakers Federation of Australia.
Researchers found that a ‘minimum unit price’ was a more effective tool in reducing consumption than taxing each standard drink, a finding that was rejected by the Winemakers Federation of Australia who said that this would cause problem drinkers to simply shift to other alcoholic beverages or illicit substances.
The group said cask wine, one of the lowest taxed alcoholic products, was more popular among the elderly on fixed incomes while full strength beer was the most abused category for young drinkers.

Australia Day is one of the worst days of the year for hospital admissions due to alcohol related harm, a new study from the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine has found.
One in 7 patients presenting at hospital emergency departments on Australia Day were there due to alcohol related harm which is an indication of the kind of alcohol misuse that takes place on the day and other holidays.
The survey found that as of 11pm on Tuesday, Australia Day, 15 per cent of patients across 100 emergency departments were there as a result of alcohol harm.
On an average weeknight, the figure is closer to 8 per cent and on an average weekend, around 14 per cent.

A leading Canberra doctor has called for more to be done to enforce the city’s liquor laws, following the one punch assault on New Years Day.
Dr David Caldicott says that alcohol is contributing to the increasing problem of violence in Canberra.
According to the doctor, surveys conducted by the Australian College for Emergency Medicine regularly show that one third of all emergency room presentations around 2am are due to alcohol. And unfortunately in Canberra, this seems to be a common occurence.
The doctor says the violence is taking place at the same places, outside the same venues. Part of the reason is that alcohol frees people of their inhibitions, the doctor says.
Dr Caldicott called on the ACT government to “make meaningful reform to alcohol legislation”.
Proposed lockout laws in Queensland would see a ban on serving shots after midnight, which the distilled alcohol industry is understandably upset about.
The Distilled Spirits Industry Council of Australia (DSICA) condemned the proposed laws saying in a submission to the Legal Affairs and Community Safety Committee that the proposed changes were “based on flawed assumptions”.
The DSICA called for more education surrounding the effects of alcohol but said it supported the overall objectives of the Proposed Bill and also shared in the state government’s concerns around irresponsible drinks promotions and alcohol fuelled misconduct.

According to the latest research, one in twenty British women are skipping meals in favour of alcohol in an effort to lose weight. This type of behaviour has been termed ‘drunkorexic’.
Experts have warned that booze contains empty calories so skipping a meal in favour of a drink could actually be starving your body of essential vitamins.
Researchers say alcoholic drinks contain trace amounts of vitamins and minerals but these aren’t enough to make a significant contribution to our diet.
