Does the idea of drinking alone sound sad and pathetic to you? It would to most people in Australia but in Finland it’s just a form of self-care.
The Finnish art of drinking alone in your underwear even has a name Päntsdrunk and given how strange it may sound to most of us, it is the subject of a new book by Miska Rantanen.
Rantanen explains that for Finns, a solitary drink at home in your underpants is a way of connecting with yourself and the world and for a people that are generally introverted, it doesn’t at all seem lonely or weird.
Also known as kalsarikännit, drinking alone is picking up interest in the USA and the book “Päntsdrunk: Kalsarikanni: The Finnish Path to Relaxation” will probably help. Rantanen does point out that drinking to cope with depression or to forget is not what its about.
