  • How to Choose the Right Wine

According to wine expert and trainee sommelier Brandon Ford in an article on WSPA.com the greatest goal when choosing a wine to go with your meal is to enhance the flavour of the food and create a whole new experience.

Trying lots of different types of wines is really the only way you’re going to figure what you prefer. Overtime you may opt for the same wine all the time or at times you may want something new to challenge your pallette.

He also explains that when it comes to wine, sticking within your budget is also important. Ford goes on to explain:

“I think it’s really experience and who you surround yourself with, its peer pressure.”

Ford goes on to provide some questions that you can ask yourself to help make the selection process easier, keeping in mind that budget and pairing with good food are key.

    He goes on to explain:

“There is this stigma associated with wine that ivory towers and cloak and dagger and it doesn’t have to be.”

If you want to expand your wine knowledge, take a course, buy a book or visit one of the many websites available on the subject.

A good website suggested is Wine Folly. Ford highlights that ultimately your wine selection is all about you and your preferences. The best advice Ford says he can offer,

“Pair what you like with what you like. The best food and wine pairing is the best one for you.”

Wine experts say beginning to appreciate wine and wine tasting is much like beginning to appreciate music or art.

The ability to sniff out subtle nuances that weave into complex wine aromas is essential for wine tasting and can be developed over time and with practice.

If you’re a beginner, try holding your nose while you swallow a mouthful of wine.

Whichever wine you choose remember that moderation is the key to drinking alcohol, even wine. In fact moderate alcohol consumption has been proven to benefit your heart, together with a slew of other health benefits but excessive consumption has been linked to cancer and other health problems.

This is one of the reasons the Australian government has made Responsible Service of Alcohol training mandatory for anyone serving alcohol. To find out more about RSA training, click here.
