  • Effects of SA Lockout Laws May be Exaggerated

    According to research by University of Adelaide law lecturer Dr Mark Giancaspro, the benefits of SA 3:00am lockout laws on alcohol fuelled violence may have been exaggerated.

    According to Dr Giancaspro lockout laws might not be the only reason why levels of alcohol-fuelled violence have dropped in South Australia. It probably has more to do with a combination of measures including requiring licensed venues to use particular forms of glassware; limiting the drink varieties sold, providing first aid officers and public transport information and managing queues outside premises better.

  • Alcohol Fuelled Brawl Leaves One Man in a Coma

    Pictured above is the alleged perpetrator of a punch that left a 29 year old Irish man in hospital in an induced coma.

    The man is being led away by police following a brawl which allegedly started due to someone jumping a queue outside a nightclub at Bondi Junction last weekend.

    The victim, Jason Cierans was enjoying a night out with friends when he was struck around 1am. He was rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital for surgery.

  • WA Bars and Pubs Get Extended Trading Hours on Sundays

    The 10pm trading limit for pubs, taverns and small bars in Western Australia on Sundays has been lifted by the state government.

    Legislation has been introduced that will allow venues to trade until midnight on Sundays. This means that licensees will no longer have to apply for an extended trading hours permits if they want to trade until midnight on Sundays.

    The industry has welcomed the news, with Bradley Woods, Australian Hotels Association (AHA) WA CEO, commending the government for listening to the electorate.

  • Man Five Times Over the Limit Charged Following Serious Crash

    Yet another example of the consequences drink driving has been reported on Smh.com.au. A man five times over the legal alcohol limit has been charged following a crash that left woman in hospital in Marulan.

    The accident happened just after 1:30pm on Wednesday on the Hume Highway, when the 2 vehicles collided, leaving an 80 year old woman in a serious condition in hospital.

    The driver of the second vehicle was uninjured and after being tested by police, returned a positive reading of 0.270. The 32 year old man was arrested at the scene.

    Alarming statistics have emerged that reveal a staggering 120 Victorian children under the age of 14 have been rushed to hospital in the last 3 years for treatment of alcohol related injuries.

    Teenage boozing results in 5 underage people a week being treated for incidents including accidents, self-harm, falls and assaults.

  • Concern Over Rise in Vic Ice and Alcohol Emergencies

    An increase in the number of alcohol related ambulance calls in Victoria is concerning especially because paramedics say they get more alcohol call outs than ice and drug related call outs.

    According to a report by health organisation, Turning Point Alcohol & Drug Centre, there was an 11.8 per cent increase in ambulances attending alcohol-related emergencies in Melbourne in 2013-14.

  • Binge Drinking Raises Long Term Health Risks for Young Women

    Binge drinking could be even more of a health risk for women than it is for men, according to Canadian academics.

    The Canadian Cancer Society says that drinking even one more drink a day can raise the risk for breast cancer by 1.5 times. Binge drinking can also increase women’s risk for head and neck, liver and colorectal cancers.

  • One in Seven Brits Drink More Alcohol than Water

    New research suggests that one in seven Brits drink more alcohol than they do water. In fact 4 million of them haven’t had a glass of water in over a week, according to the latest research.

    While the consumption of tea and coffee was even higher than alcohol, the research showed that many Brits find water too “boring” to drink.

  • Home-made Alcohol from Vegemite a Problem in NT

    It seems people in dry communities across Queensland and The Northern Territory are resorting to crafty means to get their hands on alcohol.

    Vegemite which is a yeast extract is being used to make alcohol and the problem is apparently so severe in some areas of the NT that people are purchasing 20 jars of the sandwich spread in a day.

    Authorities say local communities must take greater care in restricting the excessive sale of high yeast products such as Vegemite.
