  • Consumers Better Understand Drinks with Diageo’s New Website

Diageo Australia are hoping that its revamped website DRINKiQ will educate consumers about how to drink moderately and more responsibly by making them aware of the alcoholic content of the drinks they consume.

The company said it hopes consumers will better understand how much alcohol they are drinking, especially after a survey of Australians showed that half don’t know how much alcohol is in the drink they’re consuming, this could impact on their intoxication, their behaviour and health and safety.

The website has a useful “Drinks Calculator” to help drinkers work out how much alcohol they are consuming and how many calories are being consumed.

The website also has some facts for drinkers and dispels some common misconceptions, such as the importance of eating before drinking, why drinking coffee to sober up wont work and mixing drinks won’t make your hangover worse.

  • Top Queensland Cop Calls for End to Alcohol Violence

According to Queensland’s police commissioner, Ian Stewart, we need to act now to address the problem of alcohol fuelled violence which is rife in most parts of Australia.

Following the one punch death of 18 year Cole Miller, Stewart spoke out against what he called a “deep-seated problem in our culture”.

He explained his frustration with the alcohol violence associated with Australian culture, something he said wasn’t acceptable and wasn’t common in other cultures where heavy drinking is the norm.

The call from Mr Stewart came after the state senator Glenn Lazarus called for a senate inquiry into alcohol fuelled violence in the country.

As servers of alcohol we need to be aware of our role in reducing alcohol harm in Australia, which is why we must complete Responsible Service of Alcohol training.

If you plan on serving wine to wine snobs, you’d better ensure you’re using the right glass. Many people make the mistake of using one wine glass, no matter the variety of wine.

There’s a reason why champagne is served in a flute glass. The right glass  enhances a wine drinker’s enjoyment of bouquet, texture, flavor, and finish, so make sure you’re using the appropriate glass.

    • Champagne and sparkling wine is served in flute glasses so bubbles have space to rise
    • Red wine is served on glasses which are more round  and have a wider opening
    • Wine glasses are “U” shaped with a more narrow opening
    • Dessert wine should be served in glasses with shorter stems and bowls
