  • ABS Says Australian Alcohol Consumption at 50 Year Low

    According to The Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australian drinking rates are at their lowest in 50 years.

    They revealed that there were 9.7 litres of pure alcohol available for consumption for every Australian aged 15 years and over in 2013-14 – the equivalent of 2.1 standard drinks per person per day.

  • AHA Rejects Annual FARE Alcohol Consumption Poll

     

    FARE recently released its annual alcohol consumption poll claiming that 75 per cent of Australians believe that the nation has a problem with alcohol abuse.

    The Australian Hotels Association (WA) have rejected the findings. Its CEO Bradley Woods says that there are problems with the poll’s distribution of respondents. What do you think?

  • 276 Billion Litres of Alcohol Downed by 2019 – Euromonitor

     

    Euromonitor, a market research company has predicted that in Australia, total alcoholic drinks volume is up 0.2 per cent in 2014, representing 2.8 billion litres of alcohol.

    Some of the other findings include:

    • People around the world are also switching to brown spirits rather than white spirits.
    • In the world of beer, craft beer’s consumption is growing globally.
    • Euromonitor thinks the alcoholic drinks industry will reach 276 billion litres by 2019.

  • ALSA Responds to Underage Service Claim

    Part of Responsible Service of Alcohol means not serving or selling alcohol to minors and asking for IDs to prove that customers are the age they say.

    Yet a professor at Curtin University claims that at least half of young people find it easy to buy alcohol. He was speaking on ABC’s Radio National.

    Professor Mike Daube said some retailers are responsible when it comes to selling alcohol to minors, but many are not. He also called for the government to act.

    ALSA has refuted these claims and says that data suggests otherwise.

  • Can the Shape of Your Glass Affect How Much Beer You Drink?

     

    Would you believe that the size and shape of your glass can affect the amount of beer you drink? Well according to the results of a recent study, it can.

    Two studies from the University of Bristol in England indicate that drinkers can slow down their drinking just by choosing the right glass or marking it to indicate the volume of the drink.

    According to researchers drinking from a straight glass rather than a curved one could help you drink slower.

    Do you prefer a tall thin glass or short thick glass? Well if you prefer a short glass you are probably drinking around 30 per cent more, the study shows.

  • Official Stats Show that Sydney Lockout Laws are Effective

    Official statistics released recently indicate that lock-out laws have had a positive effect on Sydney’s  night life.

    Lockout laws, limiting the sale of alcohol in the CBD and Kings Cross and access to alcohol has been given a thumbs up by top criminologist and director of the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, Don Weatherburn.

    The bureau’s study shows a 40 per cent fall in the number of assaults in the CBD and a fall of 32 per cent in Kings Cross following the introduction of the laws.

    As servers of alcohol, it is our responsibility to ensure that customers don’t drink and get behind the wheel of a car, if we can help it. But what happens when train drivers drink?

    Apparently nearly a dozen Queensland Rail train drivers tested positive to alcohol and drugs while at work over the last 2 years. Although this is just a fraction of the number of total staff employed by Queensland Rail, it really makes you think twice before getting into one of these!

  • Diners Demanding Keg Beer Driving Installations

    According to an SA based keg supplier, Hoshizaki lancer, there has been a surge in the number of restaurants offering beer on tap.

    Demand among restaurant and cafe patrons has led to these venues having kegs installed so that they can serve draught rather than bottle beer.

    As beer drinkers become more fussy, demanding fresher craft beers, draught beer is gaining in popularity.
