  • Why We Need to Tackle Alcohol Abuse

    A leading specialist has called on the community to help tackle the alcohol abuse crisis resulting in the flooding of Canberra’s emergency departments every weekend.

    The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons ACT trauma chair Dr Ailene Fitzgerald said alcohol related traumas were totally preventable, making them even more tragic.

    The medical fraternity have thrown their weight behind the proposal to stop licensed venues serving alcohol after 3am.

    The number of ambulances summoned to licensed venues in Canberra every month have almost doubled compared to 5 years ago, and nearly one in eight emergency department presentations on Australia Day was alcohol related.

    According to data, alcohol related presentations are on the rise, and young people are the most affected.

  • The Elderly Out-drinking The Youth

    According to the latest NSW Chief Health Officers Report, 16-24 year olds are the least likely to drink daily while people over 65 are the biggest daily drinkers.

    This revelation challenges the notions that young people are the biggest drinkers in Australia.

    The report revealed that over-65s also had two times the rate of hospitalisations for alcohol-related problems compared to the 15-24-year olds.

    This is important given that most alcohol risk awareness campaigns were targeted at young drinking but more elderly Australians are exceeding four drinks daily. This is contributIng to chronic disease cirrhosis damage and alcohol related brain injury, experts say.

  • Vic Police Call for Zero Alcohol for Young People

    The Victorian Police have begun a debate over extending Learners zero blood alcohol limit to all drivers under 26.

    If this move were to go ahead there would be no safe/ permitted amount of alcohol before driving for anyone aged 26 or under in Victoria.

    According to Road Policing Assistant Commissioner, Doug Fryer, while the decision would be controversial at first, it was worth it if it would save lives. He highlighted how unpopular breath testing was when first introduced but has since had such a major positive impact on road safety.

  • Organic Whisky Comes to Australia

    Organic whisky from the American KOVAL distillery is being distributed in Australia and includes the brand’s Bourbon, Four Grain, Rye and Millet.

    KOVAL Bourbon is organic and naturally gluten-free, comprising mostly of corn an millet.

    In addition to being certified organic, all whiskies are also kosher.

    Recently Australians’ drinking preferences have shifted towards more high quality alcoholic beverages.

    The program has been just been launched for Sydney 2016 Craft Beer Week which will be running from Friday 21 October to Sunday 30 October.

    The program this year will include over 100 events at over 75 different venues including international brewery guests, beer and dessert pairing, beer history lessons and so on.

    The organisers say the event is for everyone from connoisseurs to the occasional drinker and will feature fun for everyone.

    Craft beer is one of the fastest growing drinks in popularity and this year’s program aims to reflect that.

  • Try this Spicy Bloody Mary Cocktail

    Although the bloody mary has become a popular cocktail especially for brunches, many people still don’t know how the drink came about or how to make it.

    The bloody mary is actually around 80 years old and was created in a Paris bar. The original recipe went something like this:

    • 1 oz. Stolichnaya vodka
    • 2 oz. Tomato juice
    • 1 dash lemon juice
    • 2 dashes salt
    • 2 dashes black pepper
    • 2 dashes cayenne pepper
    • 3 dashes of Worcestershire sauce

    Garnish with a lemon wedge and celery stalk.
