    Alcohol actually interferes with our brain’s response to food smells and could make us enjoy it more.

    We all know that its a good idea to mix food and alcohol, especially because food can help slow the absorption of alcohol into the blood stream and thereby slow the effects of intoxication, but now we know it also improves the experience of eating.

  • Huge New Fines for Drinking and Drugs in Victoria

    Drivers in Victoria that blow over .10 will face some huge new consequences, including having their cars confiscated, paying a hefty fine and losing their licence for 10 months.

    Victorians caught driving while drunk and on illicit drugs will face fines of up to $41,000 and lose their licences.

    The harsh new measures come into effect as of next month and provide even more of a reason why we need to drink responsibly and not drink drive.

  • “Alcohol Tracker” App Helps You Keep Track of Drinking

    A smartphone app developed in Singapore is helping drinkers keep track of how much alcohol they consume. And if they consume more than the maximum recommended amount, a warning notification is sent to them. This way they can enjoy drinking moderately without unwittingly putting their health at risk.

  • Palcohol may be Banned in SA before it Even Arrives

    Palcohol (powdered alcohol), the American made powder that when mixed with water turns into an alcoholic beverage, may be banned in South Australia before it even arrives, if Attorney-General John Rau has his way.

    Mr Rau hopes the rest of Australia will follow SA’s example.

  • Calls For Lower Alcohol Taxes on Vic Pubs and Clubs

    The Victorian branch of the Australian Hotels Association has blamed the high price of drinks at pubs and clubs for alcohol fuelled violence and anti-social behaviour fuelled by alcohol and is calling for alcohol taxes on venues to be lowered.

    The AHA Vic Branch says that if alcohol taxes are decreased, venues could lower the price of their alcohol which will minimise people pre-loading. At the moment patrons drink about 80 per cent of the drinks for the night at home and only 20 per cent is consumed on the premise because of the high price. They say this is contributing to drunkenness and anti-social behaviour.

    The group is now lobbying for taxes on pub and bar drinks to be lowered, with the aim of “luring” people back to these venues.

    The AHA says licensed venues were better equipped to deal with the responsible service of alcohol nowadays and are ready for more customers.

  • RSA WA: Police Target Alcohol Abusers as part of Operation Abide

    Police were out in full force last weekend in the Frankston CBD as part of Operation Abide, targeting intoxicated patrons in particular.

    The entertainment precinct was the main concern of police on Friday night.

    According to a post on BaysideNews.com.au, officers targeted the “radical” selling of alcohol, unruly behaviour, under-age drinking and anti-social behaviour.  “Vulnerable road users” were also part of the police operation.

  • New Zealand Alcohol Safety Group wants Alcohol Sachet Banned

    An alcohol safety group is concerned about the effects of sachets of alcohol and wants the products banned. The group together with Auckland Councillor Cathy Casey are advocating for the ban of  25 millilitre alcohol sachets.

    There are fears that the tiny sachet could be easily smuggled into events with alcohol restrictions.
